#257 ND (19th Century), Profile of Pope Pius IX on velvet background in original period frame, 185 x 170 mm, Pope Pius IX (Italian: Pio IX, Pio Nono; born Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti; (13 May 1792 − 7 February 1878) was head of the Catholic Church from 1846 to 1878. His reign of 32 years is the longest of any pope in history. He was opponent of Revolution of 1848, notable for convoking the First Vatican Council in 1868 and for permanently losing control of the Papal States in 1870 to the Kingdom of Italy. Inspired by his father and siblings, he joined the United States Army Air Service, where he became a pursuit pilot during World War I and shot down one German aircraft.
