#233 Jewish female hand embroidered head-dress with multiple coins attached to it: 24 Maria Theresia Thalers, 1819 Mexico JJ 8 reales and multitude of various Turkish coins of different denominations dated up to early 20th Century. Head-dress (shatweh) is a traditional head-dress for women of the Middle East, made in the shape of a tarboush or fez. The "shatweh" was only worn by married women and widows in the Jerusalem - Bethlehem area of Palestine. The headdress not only symbolized the prestige of the bride's father and husband but also of herself. The more coins and adornments, the higher the status of the bride and her family. Over the years, pieces could be added to the headdress or taken from it to make important purchases. Very good
